Plans for the New Covent Garden Market are being drawn up by the Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA) and should reach the council next year. The new market, part of a broader redevelopment of the Nine Elms district along the Thames riverside, will have over 500,000 square feet of trading space for 240 tenants selling fresh produce, flowers and other related activities.

The plans are being developed by Foster and Partners and will have significant residential units and opportunities. The 10 acre Flower Market site is just 400 meters from the interchange at Vauxhall Cross and will enable people to come and go easily. Additionally, outlines for the rest of the site are being drawn up by Neil Tomlinson Architects.

Baroness Brenda Dean, Chairman of Covent Garden Market Authority, commented: “The decision to prepare an outline planning application for the whole site is a major milestone and will help us fulfill our vision and commitment for the best of food and flowers in the heart of London. We are delighted to be working with such brilliant architects as Foster and Partners and Neil Tomlinson Architects and we look forward to continuing to engage with our tenants, the local community and others through the consultation process.”

CGMA will host the first of two public exhibitions about the outline planning application in November 2009, with a second one following in early 2010 before the planning application is submitted later in the year. These will be excellent opportunities for potential tenants, customers, residents and the local community the see the plans and comment on them.

The wider Nine Elms district comprises around 450 acres of land on the Thames riverside. The council wants to see thousands of new homes and jobs in the area which stretches from Vauxhall Bridge to Battersea Park.

Of the Nine Elms district, council leader Edward Lister said: "Nine Elms represents London’s biggest, most exciting regeneration opportunity. The market authority is one of a number of major investors who have recognised the area’s huge potential.”
