Nick Clegg House in Sheffield
Now that he is the second most powerful man in the country, it appears Nick Clegg no longer has a use for his ‘modest semi-detached’ in Sheffield. With a family home in Putney and a shared use of the £15m Chevening residence in Kent, the Liberal Democrat leader’s home in the Ecclesall area of Sheffield is now on the market.
Pre-election promise
Clegg was caught up in the recent expenses scandal after it was revealed that the deputy Prime Minister had claimed £84,000 on the property in four years. These included curtains, blinds, Ikea furnishings and significant decoration and refurbishment costs.
When questioned before the election about the property, Clegg said, “'It's a modest semi-detached home. It was in a state of complete disrepair, the garden was a complete eyesore, it hadn't been touched for ages. You make it sound like some like some great palatial residence. I need to keep it in basic working order, I needed to make sure that the garden wasn't a complete eyesore and I did that with the money that was made available to me as an MP so that I can live and work in two places.
“But, crucially it's not my home, it's yours, it's the taxpayers. Any gain on it when I sell it, which I will do very soon, after the election, will go straight back to the taxpayer.”
For sale
The three bedroom semi was bought for around £279,000 in 2005. Whilst the property is yet to be advertised, similar homes in the area are selling for over £250,000. It is understood that Clegg does not intend to profit from the transaction.
Parliamentary riles oblige Clegg to maintain a property in his Sheffield constituency, and a spokesperson confirmed the deputy PM intends to rent a property in the area in line with updated rules on MP’s second homes.
