Just because a celebrity might once have lived in a property doesn’t automatically make it attractive to buyers, it seems. Indeed, when the property in question may well have been the location for illicit trysts with one of the most iconic figures in recent British history, the apartment may contain far too many memories for potential purchasers.
The former Household Cavalry officer, James Hewitt, has taken his £860,000 London property off the market after failing to find a buyer in the last ten months. Whilst the restaurateur and famous ‘cad’ may have had success in luring the late Princess of Wales to his Chelsea maisonette, he is having more trouble managing to woo potential buyers.
The property was for sale for £860,000 with Wedgewood Estates. However, it is understood that Hewitt has taken the property off the market after the agents failed to secure a satisfactory offer since the property went on sale last October.
Still for sale
Diana’s former beau claims that he is merely switching estate agents. "The flat is still for sale," he commented from his Marbella base, where he runs The Polo House restaurant. "It is in the hands of an agent at the moment."
Hewitt has tried to sell or remortgage the property on two previous occasions. The maisonette failed to sell for £475,000 in 2003 and then the 52 year old offered to remortgage the property in 2006 after a bankruptcy petition was filed by the Inland Revenue. It was alleged that the former army office owed a total of £2.7 million, although the claim was dismissed in the High Court.
Hewitt opened his Spanish restaurant in the spring of 2009 and, according to the controversial bounder, the venture has been a success. He told the Daily Telegraph, "Everything is fine here. It's good."
