A new study out puts London, Edinburgh and York at the top of the list of most desirable cities in the UK in which to live and work. While London leads in the most categories, northern cities York and Edinburgh actually come out ahead when all category rankings are totaled as the most desirable place to live, according to PlaceIndex from YouGov. The survey looks at a range of factors in determining desirability, including culture, ease of getting around, shops, restaurants, safety and investment potential.
London comes out on top in several categories: cultural experience, good cuisine and shopping. People also find the city reasonably easy to get around, as it has an excellent public transportation network and plenty of cabs for everyone.
Both York and Edinburgh came in front of London on atmosphere, safety and overall desirable city ranking, with Edinburgh being tops for atmosphere and heard something pleasant. The survey shows a clear pattern with more unfriendly cities located in the south, and London is rated lowest in the category of friendly and helpful neighbors. Oxford and Cambridge also came out near the top of the list as they are considered safe cities to visit, with high ratings for cultural experience, a good atmosphere and good food.
Tasha Satara, Senior Research Executive in YouGov’s Public Sector team said “PlaceIndex is a really exciting way of seeing how Britain’s cities fare on a number of measures. It provides cities with the opportunity to see how they are perceived by the general public and how far this perception is from reality.”
